Statement from Margarida Jorge, campaign director for Lower Drug Prices Now, on the Trump administration’s pledge to make future covid-19 vaccine free for “vulnerable” Americans:

Wednesday, June 17, 2020

“A commitment to affordability that can’t be made on the record is just another hollow promise to the American people. Like so many things with this administration, this pledge is nothing more than empty rhetoric. As long as Big Pharma companies are given monopoly control to set drug prices, we have no reason to believe that they won’t gouge us for vaccines like they’ve done time and time again. There’s no way around it: an expensive drug means higher costs for Americans. When vaccines are covered by insurance with no-cost sharing for patients, it just means the cost is being passed down some other way, through increased premiums and taxes. To ensure these vaccines are affordable and accessible, we need Congress to end monopoly drug pricing.”
